Excellent novella. A critique of American society.p and the bullshit American Dream. Steinbeck ahead of his time. Ranch( a metaphor for America - full of loneliness and fear. Socialist perspective, of course, but Steinbeck knows that there’s no happy endings in a world where there’s a lack of solidarity. At least Lennie and George have something- friendship. Th writing is naturalistic and simple....and that’s its brilliance.

Saw it as a play on stage in Hamburg. Was one of the most impressive performances I ever saw at the theatre.
You can always tell when there is a stunned silence from the audience at the end for several seconds, with rapturous standing ovations to follow.
